Jan Morris Jones’ year - 60th anniversary of Bangor

Jan, a lecturer in midwifery at Bangor University, has four children still at school, but took on the challenge of President with enthusiasm.  Jan belived that the year should not only be a time to celebrate, but also to look to the future and embrace the issues that face women in the 21st century.

During Jan’s term of office funds have been raised for many local organisations, such as the Women’s Refuge, the Samaritans, Wales Air Ambulance, Breast Cancer Charities, Carer’s Outreach and funds went to Restoring Dignity.

As a Club we have direct links through a member, Sian Kent, to the Itala School in Zambia and have funded the teaching studies of village woman Grace Mwansa, who is now fully qualified and will take up a teaching post shortly.

Jan has overseen plans for the improvements to the garden at Alaw Ward, Ysbyty Gwynedd, undertaking some of the heavy gardening work herself together with member Joan Thomas, and this work will be continued, and should prove beneficial not only to the patients, but also to visitors to the Ward.

Jan and members hosted tea for ladies from the Abbeyfield Sheltered Housing, Penrhos Club, Ty Cegin Lucheon Club an Garth Community, it was a successful afternoon with an opportunity for fun and friendship.

Jan is proud to be a member of SI Bangor and District and has endeavoured to raise the profile of Soroptimism through service, fun and above all through friendship.
