Welcome to Beckenham Soroptimists

The Beckenham & District club is a lively group combining the enjoyment of friendship and social gatherings with fund raising and our programme action activities. The club was founded 57 years ago; Croydon Club is our ‘mother club’ and we retain close links. Whilst the majority of our members live in  the London Borough of Bromley we welcome women working in the area or living in other areas.

Meetings are held in the Beckenham Methodist Church on the first and third Mondays of each month except August. We welcome visitors to our speaker meetings so we can share the expertise of our speakers and the refreshments afterwards. Please see our programme page for more details. Members also meet together in smaller groups according to their interests- for example a book group, two Mah Jong groups and a growing walkers’ group.

We support local, national and international charities and projects through fundraising and by giving individual and group service. See the Projects page for more details.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Our President for 2009/10 is Lesley Darvill

I am delighted to be elected as the club’s President for 2009/10.

The last year has been another successful year for the club and I thank Joint Presidents Dinah and Christine for their hard work and the enjoyment we have had. Their chosen charities have benefited from generous financial grants whilst we have also given personal service where possible to local organisations.

Our programme for this year includes interesting speakers, the opportunity to debate important issues and enjoy social activities. New initiatives include the start of a walking group. More details are listed on the Programme page of our website.

My choice of the charities to be supported this year focus on national and international needs. As an Advisory Teacher for pre-school infants I was particularly involved in the needs of children with hearing problems. So I am keen to raise money for, and the local profile of, the National Deaf Children’s Society. Elsewhere on this website you can learn about our 3 year project to support the rural community of Mufindi, Tanzania by funding the provision of clean water supplies for orphan houses, the local school and hospital.
