Beach Litter Clean Provides Media Boost for Wallasey Soroptimists

Congratulations to Barbara Duff and members of SI Wallasey, who recently featured on the BBC TV Politics Show in the North West of England. The Club has been part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) adopt-a beach project for four years. Four times each year they collect and record all non-natural items found on a stretch of beach at New Brighton, Wallasey.

A reporter from the Liverpool Echo telephoned Barbara for an interview and the next day some of the team took part in a photo session on the beach. On Monday, 9 June the paper published a group of items under the headline “Beach litter a threat to wildlife”. They were featured in a large photo (with the correct spelling of Soroptimist!) with a good article.

As a result of this press article they were asked, through the MCS, to take part in the North West section of the BBC TV Sunday Politics Show to be screened at 1200 on Sunday, 15 June. The item (pre-recorded on the previous Thursday) showed members of the Club collecting, recording and bagging beach litter and Barbara was interviewed briefly. They are introduced in the feature, the “ladies of Soroptimist International”, title they say they will never live down!

The clip featuring the Club is available on the BBC website.
