Ruth Rendell raises awareness of Female Genital Mutilation
The latest Inspector Wexford novel “Not in the Flesh” penned by authoress Ruth Rendell addresses the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a cause which is close to the heart of Soroptimists.
Federation Programme Director, Hilary Ratcliffe, wrote to Baroness Rendell congratulating her on addressing this issue in her novel. Please see the attached letter.
Baroness Rendell emailed a response to this letter to Federation Office, which read:
“Dear Hilary Ratcliffe,
I am so glad you have come across the FGM sub-plot in my NOT IN THE FLESH. Of course, my object was to reach more people than one can ever reach by other means. I think it’s very important that the general public knows what FGM is and that it is being practised in this country.
Soroptmist International seems to be doing very good work to raise awareness. The more that is known about this awful practice the better.
Best wishes,
Ruth Rendell”
