Saturday of Service

Every year Soroptimists all over the world mark International Women’s Day by holding a Saturday of Service. This year, S.I. Cannock & District will be in Cannock Town Centre on Saturday March 7th between 10.00am and 2.00pm to raise awareness about violence towards women and to support Pathway, the local refuge for women victims of Domestic Violence. Many of the women and children who use the refuge go there with nothing – not even a toothbrush. Soroptimists are asking the public to help them, by taking along donations of toiletries, new underwear and any other item useful to a woman who has left home with nothing. These goods will then be taken to the refuge by the Soroptimist club’s Pathway liaison Officer, Carole Holdcroft. Members of SI will be grateful for any donation: a bar of soap, a toothbrush, a comb, a bottle of shampoo – anything which will help the women to feel better about themselves. There will be information available about the Soroptimist organisation and the Pathway project. Soroptimists will be near to the Bandstand and War Memorial and in the premises next to Greggs in Market Place Cannock.

For the United Nations, International Women’s Day has been observed on 8 March since 1975. The Day is traditionally marked with a message from the Secretary-General.
The theme for 2009 is: “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls”.
SI Cannock & District are delighted to support this theme in Cannock on March 7th and look forward to meeting with and receiving donations from members of the public on that day.
