Packs for Women’s Refuge

Club members presented packs of toiletries to Womens Aid Refuge in Coleraine. Sharon Burnett (centre of photograph) Management Co-ordinator, gave a comprehensive account of the current services provided. These included Drop-in, Creche, Childrens and Young People Programme, Preventative Education and Community Justice Programme. Also in the photograph is Eileen O’Farrell (left) and Betsy Trevor (right). The group photograph shows the packs and the members who made them up.

Soroptimist hold annual meeting

A busy year for the Coleraine Club was reviewed at the annual general meeting. It was reported that £2000 had been raised in aid of local national and international charities. Specialist speakers had kept the club informed on current social issues.

Social contacts had been made with other Soroptimist Clubs and members had attended conferences in Harrogate, and Bray.

The outgoing President, Jean Doak, thanked the members of the club for their efforts to make such an enjoyable year and mentioned the work of Hon Secretary, Ann Watson and Hon Treasurer Winsome Burns as well as other officers.

Coleraine Soroptimist’s quiz Castlerock nurse

Members of Soroptimist International Coleraine branch recently got the chance to quiz Christine Lagan, the practice nurse in Castlerock.

Christine obtained her training, qualifications and experience both abroad and in Northern Ireland. Currently she runs clinics

With GP support, covering a wide range of health issues like well woman, asthma, smoking cessation, breast awareness, lung cancer, heart, diabetes and travel health. She explained primary prevention of illness is the main role and is achieved with team work from doctors, the district, health and community nurses supported by good administration. Annual appraisal ensures staff are kept up to date.

Club members responded with several questions covering items of current debate like the injections against cervical cancer for school girls.

On behalf of the club the honorary treasurer Winsome Burns thanked Christina for her informative talk and commented on her professionalism and obvious job satisfaction.
