soroptimists on liverpool coach tour

S.I. Crosby’s Social Committee organised a coach tour for members and friends, to give everyone the chance to find out a little more about local heritage. This was a timely event for 2008, the year in which Liverpool is European Capital of Culture and the Club marks its 70th anniversary.

Ably directed by Blue Badge Guide Hilary Oxlade, the journey started in Crosby and followed the line of the river southwards to the city. The route then took in a huge selection of Liverpool’s many fine streets, buildings, riverside features and public artworks. Hilary’s commentary ranged widely, covering history, local notables (past and present) and folklore, as well as a wealth of quirky anecdotes. The group was able to view some of the impressive new developments including Liverpool One, the Museum of Liverpool Life and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal extension at the Pierhead. Calm, clear weather ensured that the sunset views across the River Mersey were stunning. Finally a meal at a city centre pub rounded off the evening.

For all - even born-and-bred Liverpudlians - it was an educational and thoroughly entertaining excursion.
