Club Diary

Croydon Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month (except August) 19:00 for 19:30. Unless otherwise stated, all meetings are held at the Shirley Park Golf Club, Addiscombe Road, Croydon CR0 7LB 

Members’ Night

Speaker Meeting
“Life Upon the Wicked Stage” – 40 years of amateur operatics.

Laurie PaintingTonight we welcome the President’s husband, Laurie Painting, former Treasury and MOD Official. Laurie first trod the amateur stage during the early 60s while serving as the Secretary of the Naval Hospital in Malta, where he lived for three years with his wife and four children (the youngest was born in Malta). On his return to the UK, he was invited to join the Eldorado Operatic Society in Lewisham, where he not only took many leading roles but also participated in the management of the society, serving eight years as chairman. He remained with this society until the early 90s when he moved to the Sidcup Operatic Society, initially as a guest (and where he met Patricia – but that’s another story…)  Laurie was presented with a National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) medal in 2000 after over 35 qualifying years on the amateur stage. He hopes you will find he has not forgotten how to entertain!

As this will be last meeting before the summer break there will be wine and nibbles. There will be a small charge for visitors of £1.50 per person.

We are delighted to announce that our guest speaker is Mr Erwin James, a former life prisoner and now respected writer and Guardian columnist. Those of you who attended our Inter Club Friendship Supper in March when we heard from Mr Paul McDowell, the Governor of Brixton Prison, may be interested to hear this much sought-after speaker.

The cost is £18.50 for a two-course meal including a glass of wine and coffee and is open to partners and other guests. The menu is: Rolled Turkey stuffed with Spinach in a White Wine Sauce with Roast Potatoes and Seasonal Vegetables, followed by Pear and Almond Tart with Creme Anglaise and a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream.

Celebrating World Food Day

Local business and professional women are being invited to this World Food Day event where they will have the opportunity to network, to fundraise, to discover the delights of Chefs Restaurant and to meet Croydon Soroptimists and learn about the work of Soroptimist International.

The event will begin with a Cookery Demonstration at 12:00 and from 12:30 onwards a World Food Buffet devised and prepared by the students. There will be a raffle in support of our charity, the Helena Kennedy Foundation, and the Soroptimist International Quadrennial Project, Project SIerra.

Family Learning

Music Therapy

Our Guest speaker tonight is Claire Tillotson. Claire studied music therapy at Nordoff Robbins in London, following a career as a secondary schools music teacher. She currently works as a therapist at Riverside School, Bromley, a school for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Claire is involved with the organisation of Project Bethlehem 2009 a six-week introductory music therapy training project which will be delivered to staff at the SOS Children’s Village in Bethlehem. After six weeks of training, staff will be left with the musical instruments, skills, experience and confidence they need to run a music programme to benefit those children traumatised by the effects of war.

Guest speaker tonight is weatherman Ian Currie, a columnist for Garden News, editor of Weather Eye and a regular weather columnist for local newspapers including the Croydon Advertiser. Ian is also a broadcaster and has appeared on many TV and Radio programmes. He has written Red Sky at Night, a compendium of weather sayings, and I Spy Weather which has over 100 colour pictures on all aspects of the weather, many taken by Ian.
