Club Friendship Links
SI Dundee has formed Friendship Links with the following Clubs: SI Swansea (Wales), SI South Kolkata (India), SI Brighton (Australia), SI Bergen (Norway) and SI Anchorage (Alaska).
Working to support SI South Kolkata

During 2009-2010 we will be raising funds to support SI South Kolkata’s ongoing health, education and vocational training projects for disadvantaged women and girls.

Past Presidents Pat Dryden, SI Swansea, and Jo Weir, SI Dundee, celebrate the formation of the Friendship Link between the two clubs in 2008. SI Swansea have supported SI Dundee’s Friendship Link with SI South Kolkata, contributing £325 towards South Kolkata’s health, education and vocational training projects.
Club Activities

Soroptimists Salsa to support projects for women and girls in India
Members and friends took to the floor enjoying an evening of Latin American music and dance. £500 was raised which will go to support SI South Kolkata health, education and vocational training projects for women and girls. A great night was had by all!
International Women’s Day 2009
The Club celebrated International Women’s Day (8 March) by participating in the Dundee International Women’s Festival. The club hosted two speakers from the Nablus Family Defence Society, responsible for setting up the first shelter for battered women in the Arab world.
UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Club fundraising efforts resulted in a donation to Dundee Domestic Abuse Forum enabling them to fund a performance of ‘Jackie’s Story’ a play portraying the harrowing realites of domestic abuse, written and performed by Naomi Breeze (Breeze Productions).
Hats for babies in Nepal
Premature babies in Nepal will benefit from colourful hats knitted by members of the Club who supported Save the Children’s “Knit one, save one” campaign.
Enjoying an Arabic Hafla at Dundee International Women’s Centre
Members enjoyed a fabulous arabic banquet and then attempted to shed the extra pounds by learning to belly dance! A great evening of fun and friendship hosted by members of Dundee International Women’s Centre!
Fundraising for Project SIerra
Over £600 was raised for the Soroptmist International Quadrennial Project, Project SIerra - a family and a future, by selling donated goods at the Rotary Club of Dundee’s Charity Stalls event in July 2008.

International Day of Peace
To mark UN International Day of Peace (23 September) members of the Club manned a display on Peace at Borders Bookshop in Dundee and presented Dundee Lord Provost, John Letford, with the Soroptimist Peace Charter.

In addition to our regular programme of meetings, we also hold fund raising and social events and participate in a number of community service projects e.g. helping at the annual Discovery Games for disabled athletes from all over Scotland; knitting hats for premature babies in Nepal; hosting afternoon teas for the elderly; arranging outings for disadvantaged children; raising awareness of domestic violence and supporting our local women’s refuge.
President’s message
Welcome to the 2009-10 Year of Soroptimist International of Dundee.
My theme for the year is ‘FORWARD LOOKING : LOOKING FORWARD’
Soroptimist International has always been proactive looking to the future needs of its members in a changing world, and I would like us to look forward and see how we can offer young women of today the support, friendship and opportunity for service that we have found as members of Soroptimist International of Dundee.
We have a great programme of speakers, fund-raisers and Social activities over the next 12 months (follow this link to see our 2009-2010 programme ). We will also be continuing with our programme action, participating in community projects benefitting women and girls locally, nationally and internationally.
I have selected SI South Kolkata as the main recipient of funds raised by the Club this year and three fundraising activities are being planned. The first is an evening of Latin American Dancing - ‘The Latin Quarter’ - with the opportunity of learning the salsa. This is a shared fund-raiser with half the ticket proceeds going to an orphanage in Peru. The date is Friday 5th June, 8.30-12.30 at the Apex Hotel, Dundee. The second will be another Bric-a-Brac Stall in the City Centre on Saturday 25th July as part of the Rotary Club of Dundee’s Gala Charity Stall Event. The third is our popular paper quiz, compiled by one of our talented members, Ann Graham.
Guests are welcome at our Speaker Evenings and Social Events and we would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in finding out more about the Club. Please contact us by email: sidundee@aol.com.
