Welcome from President Sally
Immediate Past President Judith welcomes new President Sally.
Firstly I would like to express what a privilege it is to be President of Epsom & District during a year of continual celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the club’s charter in 1959.
We have been unremittingly busy and especially dedicated to organising our special Gala Dinner which was held at Epsom Race Course on June 20 and attended not only by Jackie Mosedale, President Elect of SIGBI but also by The Worshipful Mayor of Epsom, Councillor Jan Mason, our own President of Southern Region Sue Dyer as well as club Presidents from across and beyond the region and of course our loyal members, their families and friends.
In this, my first letter, I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to those members who made this event such a success as well as our Memorial Service which was held at Ranmore Church on May 17 and attended by Chris Grayling MP for Epsom & Ewell (Shadow Home Secretary). Special thanks to Barbara Watts, Joyce Boorman, Marion Street, Judith Kelly, Jane Malden and Megan Adey, their support and vast experience has been unstinting and hugely appreciated. Between these two events we raised a significant amount of money for Project Sierra, my chosen ‘cause célèbre’ for this year.
Our celebrations do not stop at these two unforgettable events, we are also in the throes of organising a Charities Fair in November and an Art Exhibition in March and will give everyone more details soon.
On matters other than celebrations we will be collecting unwanted wheelchairs, zimmer frames and other equipment on Saturday June 12th in Sainsbury’s car park in Epsom. Everything donated will be refurbished and sent on to recipients in African and Eastern European countries. We have set up an educational fund to support young women carers - working with Mid-Surrey Young Carers, which SI Epsom & District set up more than 12 years ago. In September 2010 we will be hosting a high-profile conference to raise the profile of the modern day slave trade of human trafficking.
More about all these events can be found elsewhere on our site. Do have a look and feel free to contact us about possible membership. We’d love to hear from you.
Yours in friendship
Sally Curtis
