President’s message
President IshbelIt is always an honour to be asked to be Club President – an honour and also a joy - to have the opportunity to work with each member of the Club to achieve our aims as Soroptimists.
For me, the main two things are service and Friendship. These take Guildford Soroptimists back to their very roots. I trust that Guildford club will be involved in many service tasks over the year. To start, we have our two main projects, being the active and financial support of Guildford Action and also fund raising for the children we support in Jos, Nigeria. With both of these, we will be in association with many dedicated women working for the good of others.
In thinking of our coming year, I have remembered a favourite story in Saint Mark’s Gospel. Just before His death when He was having a meal with people, a woman came in and washed His feet. Some present complained and said it was all a waste. There are many translations of the Bible and I choose that one that says ‘do not condemn her – she did what she could’. Scholars over the years have given this woman a name but Mark did not. A woman with no name who has gone down in history for ‘doing what she could’.
That is my philosophy of life and I hope we can bring it into our Soroptimist life this year.
I hope that each member of the Club will be as involved as she can – doing many things or doing few. With these thoughts in mind, I would like us to consider our Mantra for this year to be:
‘Forward in Friendship’ as we start our 51st year.
