President’s message
Welcome to the website of Soroptimist International of Inverness and Nairn. A second year - what a glutton for punishment! I have decided that with 2 youngish children, my theme for this year is Education. When my children were attending primary school I wanted to give something back so spent 10 years on their school PTA. A very enjoyable time but hard work juggling a full time job, running a house and being Treasuer of this worthy cause. Anyway that time of my life has now passed and I think in the present climate it is vital ALL children have the opportunity to enjoy learning and studying just as my own two children have.
Speakers this year include educational topics such as two views of “Getting it Right for Every Child” from the health side and also from the education side. A local initiative piloted here in Inverness “Farm at Work” is a working farm employing people who have been on long term unemployment for one reason or another. A journey around the world in 40 years, a lifetime experienced globally. “From the Falklands to Abriachan” is another experience from one side of the world to another plus the view of children who spend time in hospital and how the Senior Play Specialists make their lives bearable and educational whilst still retaining some fun.
A drop in Club membership for a variety of reasons has caused me some concern this year but through sheer grit and determination I am going to steadily increase numbers and have enrolled all members of the Club to assist with this. Another must do this year is to get at least 2 articles in the local press and Soroptimist News starting with our Literacy Weekend on 11, 12, 13 September at our local Borders store with authors, youth workers and a local Book Illustrator in attendance.
Throughout the year the committee responsible for organising the syllabus has ensured there is also plenty of fun involved along the way. Thank you for reading this and if you would like to join us for any of our events please call me on 01463 235299 or email me on simpsonr780@aol.com. I’d love to welcome you.
