75th Charter Celebration Weekend
Saturday 21st March 2009 was the Club’s 75th Charter Anniversary. After a whole year of activities our special occasion was celebrated with four members from our Friendship Link Club in Skjern Denmark.

Friday evening we all met for supper and it was like meeting old friends. Plenty to talk about and loads of information shared.
Saturday morning we met our guests for a tour of the City of Leicester. There was a particular interest in the age of the city and the architecture that still remains as well as the new.
The Day was gloriously warm and sunny with hardly a breath of wind so what better than to begin our tour than in the ruins of the Jewry Wall.
Applegate and Guildhall lane were next on our list and we visited the Guildhall marvelling on the age of the building, furniture and books that remain.
Our guests were amazed that the entry to the Guildhall was free.
The Cathedral next door impressed our guests and the steward on duty was very helpful in explaining how the Church of England came to be.
On our way to the market to see the Corn Exchange we stopped for coffee in St. Martins Square. We basked in warm sunshine outside the coffee shop overlooking the old Nat West Bank which has been on the market for some time. As no-one seems to want it we thought that it would make an interesting Soroptimist Club House!
From the Corn Exchange we walked through the market into the Town Hall Square and a photograph opportunity and from there to Curve.
We were informed by the receptionist about the architectural merits and design features of the building and while we pondered on the information we enjoyed a light lunch in the cafe area.
At their request we left our guests to browse around Marks and Spencer.
It had been a lovely day for us all.
Sunday lunch with a difference.
We thought a pub meal would be an experience for our guests, and then remembered it was Mothering Sunday! And yes:all our favourite watering holes were fully booked. But our regular meeting venue the Stoneycroft Hotel where our guests were staying came to our rescue and provided an excellent and unusual menu meeting the varied tastes of our Danish friends. The starter of Spinach Souffl∕e was almost to die for, and pasta replaced top side of beef & Yorkshire pudding. The wine and conversation flowed, the Brits reminded of their disgraceful inability/unwillingness to learn languages. Their English was fluent: the world was put rights Danish and British style and the link with S.I.Skjern-Tarm well and truly cemented. And it wasn’t just the wine! We learned three words ‘Tak fer mel’. We have committed Leicester club to a return visit in 2009/2010 and certainly President- Elect Joan & Vice -President Josephine are up for it.
