Our clubs’ support for Project SIerra
Our region fully supports the SI Quadrennial Project, and all our clubs are working hard, raising funds to support Project SIerra . The region has done extremely well so far and we will all continue to make this a high priority. Our total to date is £4345.
Members might like to know how far their money will go -
- £10 will buy seeds and tools, enabling families to support themselves
- £25 will buy a baby care pack for a new born baby
- £100 will provide food for two families for one month
- £250 will help a mother to start her own small business - girls and women are given vocational training and after completion and a ‘graduation’ ceremony are presented with a small business ’start-up’ kit
Congratulations to clubs in our region, who have made the following contributions so far -
CAMBRIDGE - Held a raffle at a recent club meeting, one of the prizes being a Soroptimist bag - and raised £45. At coffee time, at a recent meeting, cake with coffee raised £20 using Fair Trade ingredients.
CHELMSFORD - Thirty five questions about famous partnerships set members seeking answers and raised just over £200.
In October 2008, Yvonne Jaques, the only female driver with a 46-year old three-wheeled Messerschmitt KR200, took her car on a fund-raising drive around East Anglia. She asked her supporters to guess how far she would go. In the end, she managed a splendid ride of 462 miles, and donated £410!

COLCHESTER - One club member held a Divali supper for about 20 people. The proceeds will be shared between Project SIerra and MacMillan Nurses, which is the club President’s project this year. Each charity will receive £83.
EAST LONDON - The club has sent £54 to the Project SIerra appeal - this was raised from a coffee morning with a ‘buy-a-book’ sale, held to celebrate UN International Literacy Day in September.
ENFIELD - The club has a ‘penny jar’ to collect £8 a head each year for Project SIerra - to date they have raised £110+. They are carrying on this way of supporting the project from the last SI Quadrennial Project - Project Independence.
GREAT YARMOUTH - joined Kynn’s Lynn and Norwich on the sponsored walk in October 2008. They donated £300.
IPSWICH - The Quiz Night on 11th March 2009 at the Ipswich and Suffolk Club was a huge success! The event, which included a sandwich supper, was planned to celebrate UN International Women’s Day and was used to promote the club in the Ipswich area. It was fully booked with 8 teams taking part. Over £500 was raised bringing the Ipswich total to this year to over £1 000! Other women’s groups attended the event and it was a great way to spread the word about Soroptimism. The Ipswich club has more news on their website.
KING’S LYNN - joined the tri-club sponsored walk in October 2008 raising £284.
NORWICH - Norwich club also joined the tri-club sponsored walk on the north Norfolk coast in very wet weather in October 2008, raising £117 for the project.
A charity lunch was held by Programme Action Officer, Annette, and raised the magnificent total of £120 for the Project SIerra fund.
In December, the club raised £32 from their Christmas Dinner raffle and another £35 from the sale of Project SIerra notelets. A further £150 was raised by the PAC convenor from a lunch for non-Soroptimist friends.
Norwich club held a concert by Upper Octave, on Saturday 28th March to publicise Project SIerra - they had a display showing our work in Sierra Leone.
A £40 donation was received from a club member, following the recent Project SIerra presentation at the LAR Regional Meeting on 13th June. The club is still collecting coins in Smarties tubes - this will be finished in July 2009.
SOUTHEND-ON-SEA and DISTRICT - raised £420 by holding a lunch on Canvey Island in January and donated a further £90 from a Garden Party in August 2008.
The club has donated £120 since April 2009. This was a donation from a member and did not involve the club in fund raising.
In June 2009, the club held their meeting at Southend SAVs rather than their usual venue and had a frugal meal, but paid their usual dining fee. The profit will go to the project.
SUDBURY, HALSTEAD and DISTRICT - The Sudbury Club raised £190 for Project SIerra on a sponsored walk in September 2008.
A fundraising Fashion Show at Bures Community Centre in Bures, Suffolk on 18th April 2009 gave friends and Soroptimists a delightful chance to buy. The club has sent a further donation of £574 from this event and other donations.
Many thanks to Andrea, our Project SIerra Ambassador for her excellent presentation to members at the Regional Meeting in June.
Several members commented how good it was to hear about the project and the impact on donatons was obvious - above. Andrea updated us on the three areas of Soroptimist International’s work with Hope and Homes for Children
- and the amazing S I total world-wide of £332 155 to date. We are about one third of the way to our £million target and about half way through our four-year programme - work it out!
Please keep in touch about your Project SIerra fund raising - Thank You
