Licking Lassa Fever

  • About 3,000 people die every year in Sierra Leone.
  • 2 out of every 10 people admitted to hospital with the disease die.
  • 31% of those under 18 with the disease die
  • 90% of unborn babies with the disease die
  • 30% of pregnant women with the disease die
Lassa Fever is a viral disease, carried and transmitted by rats through contamination of food and water supplies by their droppings and urine, and through being eaten. 
 
The Project
To establish community education and environmental programmes in rural villages in Sierra Leone to help stop so many people suffering and dying from Lassa Fever.
How will we help?
  • Provide clean water and effective sanitation through new wells and latrines,
  • Provide rat-resistant food storage containers and water bottles,
  • Provide tools and seeds for villagers to grow their own food,
  • Provide outreach workers to teach villagers how to combat this disease and help themselves.
Project Goal
To raise £180,000 over 2 years.
 
Who will benefit?
The entire population in 75 villages in rural Sierra
