President’s message

Welcome to the Newport and District Soroptimist website.

I am Jennifer Lewis and I have the honour of being the President of SI Newport and District for the 2009-2010 year. I am very lucky in that SI Newport is a very progressive club with both individual members and the various committees on hand to help me to achieve the goals of our club and SIGBI. I became aware of Soroptimism a number of years ago through a relative who was a member of SI Llantrisant & District, the club I was to later join.

I transferred to Newport when Llantrisant closed as it could not meet the ration between active and inactive members. Thankfully this rule no longer applies as the inactive members are often able to make more of a contribution due to their being more in charge of their time.

I am looking forward to my year in office, not least because this year’s Conference is on our doorstep and we have the opportunity to show the visitors to Cardiff what a wonderful place Wales is and to let them know how much SI Newport does towards the Programme Action Goals.

I also feel that, although there is a lot of work to be done, we also need to have some fun. To this end, I have built into my programme events that are primarily fun for members but that also raise money for our projects. This in no way detracts from the programme action work that is the mainstay of our club.
