Project SIerra

SI Carlisle have started their fund raising for Project SIerra with a “Count Your Blessings” quiz. SI Carlisle are happy for anyone to use this quiz for their own club, you just need to change the club name at the bottom of each sheet.

In Sierra Leone life expectancy for women is 42 years and nearly a third of all children die before their fifth birthday.

Project Sierra is a four year partnership between Soroptimist International and Hope and Homes for Children.  Raising over £1 million will improve the lives of some of the most deprived women and children in the world and help them to face their futures with confidence.

Project Sierra will:

·        Improve the health and life chances of thousands of deprived women and children living in abject poverty

·        Promote stability and self-reliance in post conflict society

·        Provide education, training, small business and life skills support to enable families to become self-sufficient and support their children

·        Build the capacity of local childcare professionals and create models of excellence that can be shared with other countries in Africa

·        Enable more children to grow up in a caring family

The members of Soroptimist International of Carlisle hope that you will ‘count your blessings’ as listed overleaf in order to help us reach our

International target of £1 million.

‘Count Your Blessings’ Number x Amount Equals
1 Many people need to burn wood for cooking.  Would you consider giving 1p for each electrical appliance you have in your kitchen and utility room?

2 Water is very precious in many countries and often has to be carried a great distance.  Is every tap in your home worth 2p?

3 Many people do not have access to sanitation.  Is every toilet in your home worth 2p?

4 Even candles are a luxury for some people. You will have more light and lamp switches in your home than you realise.  Are they worth 1p each?

5 In some countries families cannot afford shoes for the children.  How many pairs of shoes are in your house?  Can you afford 1p per pair? (Don’t forget your slippers and wellies!)

6 Some people sleep rough at night, even in Britain.  How many beds do you have in your home?  Is this luxury worth 3p each?

7 Some people go hungry every day.  Will you consider giving 2p for each of the meals you served up yesterday multiplying it by the number of people you served?

8 Many malnourished children do not live 5 years.  Are the members of your family over 5 years of age a blessing worth 5p each?

9 Communication is vital and it is nice to receive letters, emails, phone calls and texts.  Would you like to give 2p for all of those you have received today?

10 Some children never have the opportunity to go to school.  Would you consider giving 3p for every school those in your house have attended?

11 In some countries many people are disabled, some from acts of violence.  Can you give 2p for each healthy limb of every family member?

12 Some people are blind; others have no access to eye care.  Is each pair of spectacles in your home worth 2p?

13 Many people do not have good medical facilities available to them.  Do you agree our NHS is worth 20p?
14 Tea and coffee are cash crops grown in some poor countries.  Could you give 2p for every cup of tea and coffee drunk in your home yesterday?

15 Britain is a prosperous country ‘flowing with milk and honey’.  Have you a jar of honey in your home?  Is it worth 10p?

16 Many people overseas walk everywhere. Would you consider giving 1p for each wheel on a bike or car owned by your family, or making a gift if you travel by bus?
17 Look back over recent days and if you feel glad you can count so many blessings, you might like to add an extra donation.
