President’s Message
Happy New Year everyone ……
How fast the time has gone. I cannot believe I have only three months left as President. When I started I was very apprehensive, not having done anything like it before, and wanting to do my best for the club. It has been very eventful so far and very enjoyable.
I have learnt that it is impossible to plan everything, something will surely go wrong at the eleventh hour but there is always someone who will help to overcome it.
Take the first planned event the Trinny and Sussanah make-over evening.
The day before the make-up artist withdrew. Help! That is exactly what Sarah from the Bodyshop did. She changed shifts and was there to do and advise on everyone’s make-up. With Lynette(personal dresser) and Nicholla (Hair) she helped to make the evening a success. .So what else could go wrong!! Well, as I stood up in a packed room to introduce the evening my front crown fell out! I caught it as it fell &, with hardly a pause (& without smiling), continued the introductions.. Thankfully few people noticed –except hawk-eye Louise and her face was a picture. I learnt that night to cope with anything.
The trip to visit the Morgan Car Factory coincided with the hottest day of 2009. With a full coach of members, husbands and friends off we went to Malvern. The lunch at the Nag’s Head was superb and as it had the longest list of real ale in Worcestershire, even the most demanding husband was in seventh heaven. The cars themselves were wonderful and we all picked the one we wanted. Sadly, not one of us won the star prize car in the centenary raffle. The afternoon finished with cream tea on the terrace in the sun and we all dozed in the bus home. A good time had by all.
We’ve had several fund raising events - Coffee Mornings, Beach Festival, Hospital Fete, Quiz. We’ve all worked hard but had fun along the way. In September we held a Charity Film Show at Taliesyn Theatre at the University Campus, Swansea Over £800 was raised for the Cardiac Unit at Morriston Hospital . This is my chosen charity for the year. It is my way of saying thank you for expert care they gave my husband and other members , spouses and families. We are very lucky to have one of the best cardiac surgery Units in Europe on our doorstep. Thank You .
But the year is not over yet. We still have several events to come ……
On January 23rd we are holding a Noson Lawen to celebrate the Welsh Patron Saint of Love – Santes Dwynwen.
Onllwyn Male Voice Choir together with Serenata, Port Talbot’s newest Ladies Choir, which will be making its debut during the concert, volunteered to appear to help raise more funds for the Cardiac Unit. Mrs Novella Roberts-Lewis, Harpist is also giving her services free.
In February the International Women’s Day Lunch has an ABBA theme, superb Greek menu and, and as guests are coming appropriately dressed, it promises to be great fun. Hope everyone will be in good voice!
Come & join us for these two great events. We’d love to see you.
President Sue
