International Goodwill and Understanding : Gobizazi Creche
We support a creche for Aids/ HIV orphans outside Durban, South Africa - we correspond with it and from our fund raising offer some financial assistance.
In 2001 several members of SI Port Talbot attended the Soroptimist International Conference in Durban,South Africa. Following the visit the Club decided to support a project in South Africa and a link was made with the Heartlands Development Foundation which administers donations from various national and international charities to support schools, nurseries and creches in the area.
We have been contributing to the creche for nine years and together with donations from other organisations the conditions of the creche have improved immensely - with new toilets, improved kitchen, a television set and a ceiling fan. The children recieve two meals a day and as a result are healthier and happier.
SI Port Talbot now donates £200 per annum to help finance the Gobizazi Creche in the Zembezi Tribal Area od Durban. The creche is run by a husband and wife team and has approximately 60 children attending who are affected by Aids / HIV.
Annual updates and photographs are recieved and the following are some of the improvements that have been achieved since our involvement :-
- Employment of a teaching assistant
- Improvements in the feeding programme
- Improvement in the toilet facilities
- Purchase of a TV and Video-recorder
We are pleased that we have been able to contribute to these improvements and hope that we will be able to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
