PROGRAMME ACTION REPORT - REIGATE        March to June 2008

  • Recycling Evening – this took place immediately prior to the February meeting. The items collected have now been distributed:

    • Paperback book to East Surrey hospital and a school in Nevis.
    • Bedding and towels to the local women’s refuge
    • Jewellery to S! South Wales group for Lassa fever
    • Foreign coins for Great Ormond Street
    • Used stamps
    • Toiletries to the Gatwick Detention Centre

  • President’s charity 2007-8 - Age Concern. This was a successful fund raising year with a range of fundraising activities e.g. Turkish dinner and a total of £1700 was raised and presented to representatives from Age Concern at the April meeting.

  • President’s charity 2008-9 – Canine Partners. This charity is part of the Assistance Dogs worldwide. These working dogs enable disabled people to access independence and totally changes the lives of these people. Support for this charity will largely be fundraising, the first to be a cream tea in July. A visit to the Canine Partners headquarters in West Sussex is being arranged.

  • Tanzania – A Reigate member visited a school on Mafia Island in Tanzania recently. After persuading a number of people on holiday there at the time to contribute substantially to the school, books and pens were bought for all pupils. The link continues with funds being transferred via the local hotel. A presentation was given to the Reigate group and fundraising has started. £350 has been collected from a sponsored swim.

  • Jingle jars with Project Sierra labels have been distributed to all members. These are for loose change. This will continue all year.

  • Talking newspapers – new premises have been found. S! Reigate and Rotary members have restarted this valuable service.

  • Ongoing service in the community – a great number of the members continue with a wide range of links to charities and initiatives in the community. Some of these will be presented to club members at the next meeting.
