HUMAN RIGHTS DAY: President Val, fellow Soroptimists and volunteers raising awareness about human trafficking.

In the evening a Service was held supported by local dignitaries and members of the community.

International Night

Members and guests celebrated the evening by preparing a buffet of “international” cuisine and marked the occasion by wearing a variety of international costumes.

Charity Golf Event - September 2009 Raised £2,355.00

Walk2New York - A total of £6,320 has been raised for Project SIerra

UPDATE: A cheque for £4,000 for Project SIerra has been presented to Anne MacDonald, Regional President, Cheshire, North Wales and Wirral. The total now raised is £6,320 which includes £1,000 donated by the Royal Saudi Arabian Embassy in London.

S.I.Rhyl & District organised Walk2NewYork to raise the profile of Soroptimist International and it’s quadrennial project, ‘Project Sierra’, by taking messages of Goodwill from the ‘Desert Eye’ book (of the children’s National Environmental Art and Writing Competition) to the United Nations in New York. The ‘Walk’ started from Trafalgar Square to Heathrow, and from JFK to Brooklyn Bridge. Imelda Jones and Shirley Jones of S.I.Rhyl were joined by Margaret Middlemass of SI Leeds.

Senior Citizens Tea Party

RHYL WEEK CELEBRATIONS- 23rd - 29th May 2009

Rhyl Week Committee works in partnership with businesses and community/voluntary groups to help promote the town of Rhyl.

During the last few years SI Rhyl & District have endeavoured to support this venture by arranging:

Flower Festivals
Tea Party
Evening of Song
Floral Arts Demonstration
Audience with Satish Kumar.

This year members have planned and are hosting a Tea Party for senior citizens.

Saturday of Service - 7th March 2009

As a service to the community, members of Rhyl Club provide Afternoon Tea for the benefit of Contact the Elderly, an organisation helping people aged 75 or older who are lonely, live at home on their own and are unable to easily get out of the house unaided.

Cheese & Wine Evening - 5th April 2009

Past President Shirley hosted a Cheese and Wine Evening in support of Burkina Faso Water Project.

As part of World Water Day, a survey was prepared based on using 10 litres of water and club members were asked to record:

How many people shared 10 litres of water
What the water was used for
What did they find they could not do
How much water did they think they used on an average day

Friendship Visit to Perigueux

We assembled at Rhyl Station at 6.15 a.m. to embark on our visit to Perigueux. Our connection with the Euro Star train was not without hiccups as London was gridlocked due to a fire, and a protest. However we finally arrived in Paris and thence to Bordeaux, a beautiful city and well worth a visit.

On arrival at Perigueux we were taken to a reception where we met our hostesses and also introduced to Soroptimists from Holland who were to join us for the weekend.

Saturday morning we were taken to the fruit and vegetable market and at midday assembled at the City Hall to be officially welcomed by the Mayor of Perigueux. Afterwards we were taken on a tour of the city which included a visit to the splendid Cathedral. In the evening we enjoyed traditional food, wine, and dancing.

Sunday we boarded a coach bound for a tour of the Dordogne which took in the wonderful old city of Sariat. Our hostesses entertained us to a farewell dinner in the evening.

Monday 8.00 a.m. we left for the return journey to Rhyl.

We would like to thank our friendship link who made us welcome and gave us such a memorable time.
