President’s message

I am very pleased to welcome you to our Club which was chartered some 52 years ago. Since then we have worked, in various ways, to transform the lives of women and girls both locally and worldwide and that work continues today.
As a club we meet approximately twice a month and these meetings include the business we transact, listening to invited speakers relevant to our causes and working on the various committees which assist the Executive run the Club. We also arrange social events which help raise funds for the charities we support and which enable us to enjoy each other’s company in a less formal structure. As our organisation is worldwide we have links with clubs all over the world and this year we are delighted to be hosting weekends from two of our friendship links – Warsaw and Muenster.
My chosen charity for the club to support this year is the St Albans and Hertsmere Women’s Refuge. Evidence shows horrific abuse that women suffer at the hands of their partners, and their children also suffer. Figures show that 70% of female murders are perpetrated by their male partner and in the ten years to 2004 in England and Wales 29 children were killed during contact visits.
It is my sincere hope that in my presidential year we can play a part in alleviating some of the suffering that exists in this area. If you are interested, I would very much welcome any support so that we can go that little bit further.
