Programme Action
As a Club we work within the Programme Areas agreed at International level. Over a four year period we raise money on a rolling programme for different charities or causes. In 2008/2009 our efforts will go to St Giles Hospice and EMBO, which is a project we support in South Africa. We have a friendship link with the Soroptimist Club in Durban and together raise funds for the project which supports children who have been orphaned due to HIV AIDS and who in the main are brought up by their grandmothers. We are pleased to report that our friendship link in Japan has also joined in raising funds for this.
We continually work to support a local refuge for mothers and children escaping domestic violence. This year we have held two summer outings where the children enjoyed days in the country, enjoying the open air and doing such things as picking fruit and paddling in a stream. Throughout the year we provide numerous items for use as the families move into new homes. We will be holding a New Year Party in January.
We have a contact with a school for children with special needs and members attend to help as needed. We also take care of part of the garden.
To help with literacy for children a number of members take toy sacks into reception classes and read stories with the children and give books for them to take home.
