President’s message
Welcome to Soroptimist International of Torquay and District. I am Maureen Hunnable and have been a member of the Torquay club since 1986. I became president of this club in April 2009. This is my third term of office.
Each year the president of our club choses which charity or organisation we would like to support. This year I have chosen two. My original choice had been Children’s Hospice South West. This charity was formed in the early 90s with the intention of raising money to build a children’s hospice in Barnstaple. I have supported this charity since then. It was therefore my natural choice once again. I also support the local hospice, Rowcroft, and realised that this hospice is struggling a little so the Torquay club, very willingly, agreed to try to help both during the coming year.
We aim to raise money in many ways such as sales of produce, autumn fairs, participation in Cockington Fair, Babbacombe Fair and many other ways. All club members work very hard during the year but also have lots of fun and meet up with many old friends and make lots of new ones, therefore we have many social functions where more money is raised for the year’s charity.
We look forward to welcoming visitors to Torquay and also any local ladies who might be interested in joining us at one of our club meetings.
